About Reiki: History & Value of the Usui Lineage
The Origin Story
Usui Reiki was founded in Japan in the early 1920s by Mikao Usui. After embarking on a 21-day spiritual fast, meditation, and prayer atop Mount Kurama, Usui experienced a profound spiritual awakening. During this period of intense dedication, he was gifted with a divine realization of how to channel the Universal Life Force Energy (Rei meaning Universal, Ki meaning Life Force Energy) safely, without ever depleting his own personal vitality.
Usui spent the rest of his life passing this sacred tradition to others, most notably Chujiro Hayashi, who later initiated Hawayo Takata. Madam Takata brought Reiki to the Western world, establishing the foundational lineage practiced globally today.
